Brisca card game

ALL ABOUT BRISCA

THE BASIC RULES OF THE CARD GAME BRISCA

La brisca, a Spanish card game that is a variant of the Italian card game briscola. The game is one of the Tute family of card games and is a trick taking game using a trump suit.

The game is played with between 2,3 or 4 players. If 4 are playing then it becomes a game of partners.

Each player is dealt 3 three cards, one at a time from the dealer's right instead of to the left as is usual in most other card games. The game is played with a 40 card Spanish deck, In the three-player version of the game a 39 card deck is used by removing a four (of any suit)from the deck.

After the cards have been dealt the rest of the deck is placed face down in the middle of the table, forming the stock. The top card is turned face up and put part way under the deck. This card denotes the trump suit.

The object of the game is to get the highest score by taking the most point scoring tricks (tricks where there are "Briscas" (ones or threes) or, twelve's, elevens and tens). Each trick is made up of a card led by one player plus a card played by each other player in turn. The player on the dealer's right makes the 1st lead, and after that the winner of each trick leads the first card of the next trick. Players may lead and play cards of any suit, as they do not need to follow suit ("arrastrar"). A trick is won by the highest card played of the suit led, or if it contains a trump ("una Vida" or "un Palo del Triunfo" ), by the highest trump it contains.

At the conclusion of each trick, and before the beginning of the next trick, the winner of each trick draws a card from the top of the stock deck, and the other players follow in order to his right (counter-clockwise). For the last drawing round, the last player to draw will draw the trump suit card that was turned over at the start of the game.

When all the tricks have been played (twenty tricks in two-player games, thirteen in three-player, and ten in four-player). The player or team with highest score wins the game, drawn games are also a possibility

Exchanging the trump suit card rule: The use of this rule is optional and needs to be agreed upon between the players before the start of the game.

When the trump suit card is a ten or better (eleven, twelve, one or three) , it can be substituted by the seven of the same suit by any player holding it, and before the very 1st hand is played, it can be substituted by the two of the same suit by any player holding it. Before the 1st hand is played, exchanging the trump suit card with the two has precedence over exchanging it with the seven.

When the trump suit card is a seven or less (four, five or six), it can be substituted by the two of the same suit at any time.
