ALL ABOUT BRIDGE

A SHORT HISTORY AND THE BASIC RULES OF BRIDGE

Card games very similar to bridge have been traced back to the early part of the sixteenth century when a game called Whist was popular in England. Whist slowly evolved and grew steadily in popularity.

In the early 1890's, bridge appeared in the USA at about the same time it was introduced in the United Kingdom. The game underwent many alterations until Harold S. Vanderbilt invented a new form of bridge in 1925. It incorporated many of the more popular principles and also introduced a scoring table. He succeeded so well that his game of "Contract Bridge" became the most played version of the game.

The word "bridge" comes from Russian Whist, called "biritch," meaning herald or announcer. Bridge players announce their contract bids.
