Card game baccarat

ALL ABOUT BACCARAT

A SHORT HISTORY AND THE BASIC RULES OF BACCARAT

Baccarat conjures up images in the mind of exclusive areas in casinos closed off with velvet ropes and full of rich high rolling gamblers. The truth is that this card game that is often perceived as the most sophisticated game one can play at the casino is also, in reality, the simplest.

A further irony is that while baccarat is one of the most highly profitable games for the casino, its low house edge also makes it one of the top profit making card games for players.

The history of of the game goes as far back as the middle ages in Italy where it has been suggested that the first players of the game used a tarot deck. As baccarat spread throughout Europe, the game found a perfect home amongst the aristocrats of France and perhaps this is where the 1st seeds of its image as a card game for the upper class.

The rules of baccarat are easy to remember and very simple. Basically the player has a choice of 3 bets, the banker hand winning, player hand winning or a tie. In each game there are 2 cards dealt to the player and the banker.

The object of the game is to try and have a total that is close to 9. This is calculated by adding the face value of the cards numbered 2 through 9, while counting the 10s and face cards as zero, with the exception of the ace, which is worth one.

If the hand you're betting on wins, you win even money and in an even money bet your profit is equal to your bet. It is however more lucrative to bet on a tie because if you win as you will be paid 8 to one. Meaning if you bet 10 dollars on a tie and win, you're paid back your 10, plus $80 more.

Unlike blackjack there are no 'busting hands' and in the event of your card total being two digits the 1st is simply dropped. So if you are dealt a pair of 8s your total will be 6.
The optimum result of a dealt hand would be if the 2 cards equal 8 or 9. This is called a 'natural' in baccarat and automatically wins, unless there is a tie between two naturals.
