The college was founded in 1966 as the Briarwood Secretarial School, the school became Briarwood College in 1979. It is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the State of Connecticut Board of Governors for Higher Education.

 
Briarwood's forty-three acre campus, situated at the base of Mount Southington, is about Twenty miles from the town Hartford, and is easily reached from Bradley International Airport. The campus environment is only minutes away from Hartford and Interstate I-84. the school is only a few miles from Queen Street, a major local street that offers numerous restaurants, shops and services. Close by is a very popular amusement park, Lake Compounce, as well as an Eighteen hole golf course, fitness center, skiing on Mount Southington, and the headquarters of ESPN, the sports broadcasting network.

The greater Hartford area offers numerous restaurants, theatres, outdoor and indoor concert venues, museums, parks, and shopping centers. It is also the home of Seven universities and colleges.

The student body of the college comprises about 647 students, both full and part-time. Students come from Connecticut and as well as from many other states and a number of foreign countries.

At Briarwood College, all members of the faculty teach and counsel students. Many of the faculty members are active in their professions and advisory committees and are involved in monitoring and updating the curriculum. On average, the student-faculty ratio is twelve to one.

The school's intercollegiate athletic program competes at the Division III level of the National Junior College Athletic Association . This membership permits Briarwood College to participate in the New England Region (Region XXI), which includes many other 2 year institutions.
