Barton College Athletic Scholarships

Barton College was established in 1902 in Wilson, North Carolina. It is a private post-secondary educational institution affiliated with the Disciples of Christ Christian Church. Barton College is a private liberal arts college with a student body of almost 1,200 students and a student to faculty ratio of only 11:1. Barton College offers associate, bachelor and master degrees through its five schools: Arts and Sciences, Behavioral Sciences, Business, Education, and Nursing, as well as accelerated pre-professional programs and licensure programs in English, Health and Physical Education, Spanish, and Social Studies.

Athletics Department at Barton College

The athletics department at Barton College has over 200 student-athletes participating in varsity sports for both men and women. Sports medicine, athletic training and support from trainers, coaches and athletic staff all make for an athletic experience that will help each student-athlete reach his or her full potential.

Athletic facilities at Barton College include the Wilson Gymnasium for basketball and volleyball, the Nixon Field for baseball, the Jeffries Field for softball, the Gillette Park for softball, the Barton Outdoor Athletic Complex for soccer, a tennis complex, and the Wilson Country Club for golf. A number of these facilities are community spaces and are located off-campus.

Athletic Programs at Barton College

Barton College offers varsity sports through the athletic department. Varsity sports include men’s baseball, cross country, golf, tennis, basketball, track and field, volleyball and soccer, as well as women’s basketball, golf, cross country, softball, tennis, track and field, soccer, and volleyball. There are no intramural sports or club sports offered at Barton College.

Official Sports Team: Bulldogs

The Barton Bulldogs are members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II and compete in the Conference Carolinas. Their mascot is the Bulldog. A number of teams hold conference championships, such as men’s golf, men’s basketball, women’s basketball and baseball in 2009, and baseball in 2008. In 2007, the men’s basketball team took home the championship for NCAA Division II. Some teams have also won a number of regional championships.

Scholarships at Barton College are offered to both students who demonstrate financial need and academic excellence. There are 38 scholarships that are awarded on the basis of financial need, although many do still have minimal GPA requirements. There are also departmental scholarships made possible by private donors. Most of these scholarships are in the Education, Nursing, Business and Communications departments. There are also 5 athletic scholarships that also take into account academic performance. These scholarships are the G. Ernest Brewer Memorial Scholarship, the Grover Bullin Endowed Scholarship for golf, the Robert L. Dunn Jr. Family Endowed Scholarship, the Ned Liggon Memorial Scholarship, and the William P. Nixon Jr. and Family Endowed Scholarship for baseball.
