WRESTLING

PINNED BY LENNY PROSKUROVSKY MIDWOOD HIGH SCHOOL BROOKLYN

Calmly shaking my opponent's hand just before engaging in a six-minute battle, I am all nerves within. When the whistle blows, the cacophony instantly mutes and I am taken to a world all my own.

Time slows down and seconds feel like hours. I can feel the adrenaline pumping through my bloodstream. Swiftly grabbing my opponent's leg and taking him down, I gain an advantageous position by getting his back against the mat. His shoulder blades get ever closer to the mat until they finally make contact and the referee blows his whistle, signaling the end of the match. We both share the common goal of victory, but only one of us can savor the triumph. The sensation I feel when the referee raises my arm in victory is not something many will get to experience. The road to conquest is very demanding, but at the same time very rewarding.
Ever since I stepped on the mat, I wanted to learn as much about wrestling as I could. As my first match approached, I felt confident in my abilities.

Being the only member of my team who lost at our season opener was the most embarrassing experience of my life. Hubris was my major downfall - I had over-estimated my ability, and losing was a rude awakening. After losing several more matches, I wanted to prove myself to the team by training harder. However, I had not foreseen the consequences of devoting myself to wrestling.

As I allotted more time to training, it was initially difficult to find a balance between athletics and academics. When I returned home from an exhausting practice, my bed never seemed so inviting. Retiring to bed, schoolwork was the last thing on my mind. As the year ended, I looked back on my handling of this difficult situation in shame. My frustration gave way to a new determination to reclaim my athletic and intellectual discipline.

As a competitor in wrestling and a student in a highly demanding school, I developed a work ethic that allowed me to make time not only for the things that had to be done, but also the things I loved to do.

A new confidence had me feeling better than ever. If I could overcome a challenge as great as wrestling I could overcome anything. This new mindset spread to all areas of my life. My grades improved along with my athletic performance.  After years of dedication to the team, I was awarded the honor of team captain. As captain, I realized that my behavior was influencing that of many teammates, especially the younger ones. I knew I had to lead by example. It was then that I fully understood what leadership is.

My appetite for challenges grew. I soon found myself looking for an intellectual test. This led me to the Social Science Research program and my Intel Project. Since wrestling had such a profound effect on my character, I wondered if sports could have a similar effect on others. My study examined the correlation between athletics and self-esteem in adolescents. I soon found serious research to be the intellectual double of the physical challenge created by wrestling. Throwing myself into the project, I re-experienced the exhilaration of athletic competition in a different way.

Wrestling has helped me develop a new personal philosophy and attitude toward life. The Ancient Greek idea of a balance between the physical and intellectual has taken on a new personal meaning for me. It has shown me that life is a balancing act and I am always walking the tightrope. Trying to keep my balance is what makes it interesting. The trick is not to fall off.

The 2 basic styles of amateur wrestling are Greco-Roman and freestyle. Other forms of wrestling are common within different cultures.

In college and high school wrestling, a wrestler must not only tilt the opponent's back toward the mat, breaking a forty-five° angle, but also hold the back in this position to earn points.
