WRESTLING WITH HIGH SCHOOL

BY LESLIE TAMAYO

“Don’t build a reputation on what you’re going to do, actually do it and your success would be better the reputation itself.” – L.L.T.

Like every other teenager out there, we all have to face through some traumatic events once or twice for better or for worse in our lives.

If you thought you had it unfair then name every problem you heard of, and have it all happen at once. This has all happened to me, been there done that. Anywhere from a random rumor ruining your reputation, being with the wrong crowd, losing someone you loved with all your heart, losing your parents trust, or a four page hate letter crushing your ego. These little shenanigans were no little match for the puny freshman I was, and I was not going to stand around.

So in the rough beginning of a second quarter I believed I should join another sport since swimming bored me. Basketball was out of question since I did not like it my 8th grade year and soccer was full of experienced girls that have been playing since they were five.

So I thought maybe wrestling should teach me to be stronger, and help me loose some weight since I was a whooping 140. I went into the room to check if they had a girl’s team, sadly there was not. It’s a pretty male dominate sport in which the females have to work twice as hard if they ever wanted to win just one match. I actually love a physical challenge, so I secretly grabbed some applications to allow my parents to sign.

.“You can’t do this mihija! What will our family think? What will people at school think? You’re not cut out for a dangerous sport like this! God will be upset with you since these boys will be touching you like that.” said my frantic mother with her heavy Mexican accent.

“She is right Leslie. Plus I was once a boy, too. I know about their hormones, and what they think. It would make them want to touch you in inappropriate places! Please just don’t do it!” said my reasonable, worrisome father.

Then I pleaded, “Look, this is a new thing for me. I'm aware that it is a challenge, but if I put all of my effort in it maybe this will change me for the better. I do know that there is something good stored inside me. Besides, it’s better that doing basketball or nothing. Please? Just give me two weeks. If I like it I’ll stick with it 110%, if I don’t you were right about me not being able to be cut out for a challenge such as this.”

So for the past 2 to 3 quarters I spent long hours in the hot, thick-aired wrestling room conditioning non-stop with my female coach, Natalia. My parents told my coach to bring her in since they still did not want me to wrestle guys, especially after I passed out the first time I attempted to wrestle a guy. This was not a wise idea since I still was not strong enough to win matches, especially at the weight class of 126’s. Also, to make matters worse, I had some issues with the guys since being a sensitive, inexperienced adolescent.

At last the end of the season the varsity guys were getting ready to go to state. Still not good enough for junior varsity did not go to boys’ state but instead we went to girls’ state. I only won five matches, but I believed that was good enough since this was my first year and I did place second in state.

Finally, I reached my sophomore year. I still may not be varsity ready, but next year I will be if I make 112’s after kicking butt in 119’s. Though I did not compete much in state since I fractured my arm the week before while I was coaching one of my old middle schools

Boy or girl, everyone has to fight for what you believe in, don’t let other tell you what you can or cannot do, and only you could stop yourself from your goal. Wrestling has taught me so much over the last 3 ½ years, it teaches you to be discipline, strength, and the hardship it takes to be the best. One of these days I plan to travel and compete in national tournaments, maybe even world. For now I will put 110% into everything I do, and that there is what I call real courage. Try It.
