A VOLLEYBALL IS WHAT I LIVE FOR BY VICTORIA NICHOLS, JIM THORPE HIGH SCHOOL PA.

The feeling of stepping onto a volleyball court focuses my mind and I am ready. I place myself up at the net and target my next victim on the opposing team. The play drilled into my mind for four straight years has been pass, set, hit. These three words fixated me on one sport and I knew I was supposed to be a volleyball player.

Looking back, I didn't always know that volleyball was my sport; I have tried so many things before this. In the off-season, I occupy myself with [playing what it seems] all day every day because I love it. No one is perfect when it comes to this sport, and if I make any mistakes I shake them off and try harder the next time. Volleyball is a large part of my life; I don't know where I would be without it.

During my public school years I have done many things that have been associated with athletics. I was a cheerleader for seven years, played softball, soccer and basketball. However, nothing I tried really seemed to fit my interests and my personality. I first picked up a volleyball the summer before my freshman year in high school- that changed me forever. Being a tall, athletic female in high school gave me an advantage numerous people wish they could have. I am able to reach high above the net, block a ball to the floor, attack and kill. Though I was blessed with a natural talent, there are many people who deserve thanks for helping me through the years.

Being a part of the Jim Thorpe varsity volleyball team means a lot to me. It has taught me to be determined and never give up. I have had three different coaches throughout my four years and they all left something different for me. Freshman year I was conditioned more than anything and was taught only the basic skills. Sophomore year came with a new coach who found me to be an excellent middle hitter. This person showed me how to move in a game and do all the little things properly. Junior year began and a new woman showed up at the door. My current coach, Mary Horvat, has turned me into not only a better player but a better person. She has been the push I needed these past two years to leave my mark at Jim Thorpe. I'm more aggressive, I play harder and better. Being a player who is the leader in kills every game is an amazing feeling when you read it in the paper the next morning. I am truly blessed to have such a great role model that has put so much effort in to making me a better player.

During the off-season of high school sports, I spend my summers working but still find enough time to play on sand courts. I prefer to play serious volleyball: six on six, using a clean court and rules. It is also good to know I can always get together with friends at the beach and play around with the ball. I had the opportunity to play in a grass tournament this past summer in Horsham, PA and I found it to be a great experience. When I am up against athletes, some who have been playing for their entire lives, it is an exciting level of play and I enjoy learning different strategies and competition. When the high school season is over, it is nice to stay on the court and continue playing against girls from other schools. I have been playing AAU volleyball for three years. I love spending weekends playing in tournaments all over eastern Pennsylvania. When AAU is over, I begin training and practicing during the summer to prepare myself for the season ahead. I cannot get enough of the sport; I am addicted.

On the not so bright side of volleyball, errors play a part as well. If I don't get a perfect kill, tip the ball where I want it to go, or get a good block that is in play, I get annoyed for a bit, but I have learned to shake it off and try my hardest the next time.

"Penetrate" and "just keep swinging" are two phrases that really get inside my head and help me out during the game. Playing volleyball has taught me determination, self-discipline, and team effort among other things. To me, volleyball is much more than a sport and a way to stay in great physical form, it is a means of developing personal character. Volleyball is what I live for.
