Track running by t'keyah bell cherryville high school

My name is T’keyah Bell; I’m seventeen years old in the twelfth grade. When I first began running it was just for fun in Tryon Elementary School.

Well throughout those years I never knew that running would become a passionate thing for me.

Soon before I knew it I was entering John Chavis Middle School thinking that my first year being on a real track team was about to begin, unfortunately in middle school you had to be in the seventh grade to participate in any sport. So I waited until then. Track became my first true love. That year I placed first and second throughout my conference. I even made it to county and placed third in the 100m and fifth in the 200m. At the end of that track season I received the 2004 girls MVP award.

Impatiently waiting for the next season to start I talked about track constantly. Year 2005 approached slowly of course and track season began again. I went to county for my second time placing third in the 100m and second in the 200m which improved drastically and the season was over. Before I knew it my middle school track years was over. My ninth grade year in Cherryville High was about to begin that also meant another fresh start for track. But this time was different for me; I was a lot more nervous, less confident, and worst of all I was the only girl on the team.

I placed first in the 400m and 200m, and second in the 100m at regional’s and was on my way to state for a third time. I made it in all three events, so I was really exhausted and didn’t do my best. But I did make it in the finals only in the 400m and placed the third state champion.

I have one last year to do things a little differently; I want to of course go to state again, and have in my mind of every race that I can win because in the past I’ve always kept in my mind to never except last place. Running track means a lot to me and hopefully I’ll succeed.

At first the track coach Davis didn’t really pay me much attention until after my first race. He was fascinated by my running and began encouraging me which made me feel a lot better about things. He put a difference in my running; I made it to county for a third time and placed second in the 100m, first 200m. Then there came state and it was the most exciting day of my life. The state meet was at A&T Greensboro, NC, I placed third in the 100m and the 200m. That year I was awarded MVP for a second time.

2007 track season came, and something unexpected also happen. Coach Davis resigned and that meant a new track coach. The whole track team was shocked about the situation. It was the first time in years to have a big team of girls and boys. The new coach’s was two men and a woman; yes three new coaches, Mrs. Wilson, Fox, and Chris Geeter. We didn’t like them right off because they were new and new meant a change in things. Things weren’t right for awhile, but soon they got better. That year I almost placed first in every race in the 100m and 200m. We also had a girls 100m relay and we placed in most meets but didn’t make it to the regional's. I made it through regional's and entered state in the 100m I placed seventh and fifth in the 200m. I was also awarded the 2007 MVP plaque.

Throughout those years of running track it began to feel good about knowing that it was what I wanted to do, not only that it was what I loved to do. Running track became more passionate to me then any other sport. Last year 2008 was unforgettable I accomplished more than I could have ever imagined. Track meets went by fast and there was the 1A-2A conference when I started the 400m race for the first time even with no practice. I was very nervous, asking question after question to the coach Geeter. He told me to just get and run like I always do. My daddy who was also there comforted me and that made me feel a little better so I got out there and done it. Believe it or not I placed first, not only that I broke the county record and was awarded the southern piedmont MVP award. Everyone was asking why I hadn’t been running the 400m. I didn’t even realize what I had done and of course it became my third event right before regional's.
