TRACK AND TRANSITION BY; JERONDA WOMACK, HOMEWOOD FLOSSMOOR COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL, FLOSSMOOR, ILLINOIS.

I am a determined person as illustrated through my experiences with transitions in my life and track. My name is Jeronda Alice Womack. I was born in Kansas City Missouri and grew accustomed to my environment and friends. My environment and friends after my seventh grade year in school changed, starting with my father going to Iraq and then a military move from Missouri to Tennessee and then to Illinois. Track helped me to transition from friends, track teams, and school.

I will never forget when my father was serving a year in Iraq. I was home serving a year of worry about him being alive. I strived to hear his voice each and everyday. Going to track practices and track meets helped me to relieve the worry I had about my father. Running would take my mind off of my dad being in danger and put him in the safety of stands. He loved to see me run, so I imagined him in the stands yelling “Finish Strong”! While my father was in Iraq, I qualified for nationals in the 100 meters and received a bronze medal in the 4 x 400 relay. I could tell in his voice that he felt better just knowing that I was still able to do well with out him. Track seems to help my parents almost as much as it helps me. I became a member of the national honor society in my seventh grade year. In my eighth grade year I was on national Junior Honor Society again and received the Missouri State High School Activities Association Award that was awarded to middle school student for outstanding academics and sportsmanship.

Transitioning from Missouri to other states caused me to become nervousness because I didn’t know what to expect academically or athletically. I prayed, “Lord please help me to overcome my fear of not having the ability to continue to accomplish the goals that I set for myself”. It is so hard to leave your life long friends and team mates. It is even harder to go onto a new team and new faces and still accomplish the goals that you set for your self.

Many times I had the new kid on the block feelings to creep up on me that would make me feel like an outsider. Even the newspaper would say, “In the sprints look for newcomer Jeronda Womack”. Every since then, I have been able to achieve first place ranking in the State of Illinois, sixth nationally in USATF, and have improved academically throughout my high school career, and became a part of the National Society of High School Scholars. I just read a wonderful story about Homewood Flossmoor’s greatest athletes accomplishments. I continue to strive to make foot prints like those of Adia McKinnon and others that will serve as inspiration to the next generation of athletes. I do not feel however that I will be able to be one high school’s greatest athlete because I have had to split my dedication between West High School in Tennessee and Homewood Flossmoor Community High School. What I do know, I will be the best that I can be so that I can represent them both well.

Academics, track, and the coping with changes in my life has helped me to know who I am. I am the type of person whether I win or lose a race that will keep perusing the short and long term goals that I set for myself. My track times, academics, and ability to transition continue to improve. Track has taught me to run through obstacles because at the end of the obstacles and/or transitions their just may be someone else watching who may need to know how to get over some of the obstacles that I have had to face. God’s voice, track, dad’s voice and all of the other voices in my life are how I am able to finish strong.
