TRACK AND TRANSITION BY;
JERONDA WOMACK, HOMEWOOD FLOSSMOOR COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL, FLOSSMOOR,
ILLINOIS.
I am a determined person as illustrated through my experiences with
transitions in my life and track. My name is Jeronda Alice Womack. I
was born in Kansas City Missouri and grew accustomed to my
environment and friends. My environment and friends after my seventh
grade year in school changed, starting with my father going to Iraq
and then a military move from Missouri to Tennessee and then to
Illinois. Track helped me to transition from friends, track teams,
and school.
I will never forget when my father was serving a year in Iraq. I was
home serving a year of worry about him being alive. I strived to
hear his voice each and everyday. Going to track practices and track
meets helped me to relieve the worry I had about my father. Running
would take my mind off of my dad being in danger and put him in the
safety of stands. He loved to see me run, so I imagined him in the
stands yelling “Finish Strong”! While my father was in Iraq, I
qualified for nationals in the 100 meters and received a bronze
medal in the 4 x 400 relay. I could tell in his voice that he felt
better just knowing that I was still able to do well with out him.
Track seems to help my parents almost as much as it helps me. I
became a member of the national honor society in my seventh grade
year. In my eighth grade year I was on national Junior Honor Society
again and received the Missouri State High School Activities
Association Award that was awarded to middle school student for
outstanding academics and sportsmanship.
