the skill of having a will by sheena johnson, sylmar high school

Without the will to be great at a sport, how would you gain the skill in order to be great at it? If you want to be an expert in a certain field, you need not only great skills, but an even stronger will.

Motivation is needed more than skill. It is obvious that in order to be an expert in any sport, you need a certain degree of skill. But what would even the best skills do if an athlete didn’t have the motivation to use it. For example, Athlete 1’s skill level would stay the same because he doesn’t want to improve. While Athlete 2, who has the same amount of skill as Athlete 1, would pass by Athlete 1 because he has the desire to be even better.

In the 1980 Olympics, the U.S. Hockey team went up against the highly victorious Russian Hockey team. It was clear that the Russians had more victories than the U.S. and were the better team, but to an eye blinking surprise, the U.S. won. A team whose skills were not as high as its opponents won only on one greater factor. The U.S. Hockey team wanted the victory more.

I use to think that even if someone had a lot of motivation to win, they couldn’t bet someone that was clearly more skilled than you. This thought soon changed after a tennis match I had lost. My dad came up to me saying, “you could tell you were the better player out there, its just that your opponent wanted the game more.” I was visibly a more skilled player than more opponent, but since her will to win was stronger than her skill and mine, she was the champion. Like Ali said, “Champions…have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill.”
