From its military beginnings, Taekwondo metamorphosed into more of a recreational activity. Today, Taekwondo is not only prevalent overseas, but also in America. There are many gyms in the area that focus on Taekwondo specifically, as well as mixed martial arts. Taekwondo competitions take place all over the country.

Taekwondo is not just a recreational activity that can improve one’s physical fitness, but it also improves one’s mental stamina and focus, in every area of life.

The three areas focused on are forms, breaking, and sparring. Forms are the culmination of the grace studied in Taekwondo and specific steps, all put together to form a series of fluid movements. Breaking is the “brute force” aspect of Taekwondo, but also needs a great deal of mental energy. Participants can break one board, multiple boards, cinder blocks, and other objects with any area of the body. Some competitions regulate the use of heads to break, as to prevent injury. Sparring is the Taekwondo equivalent of boxing. Participants can use kicks, blocks, and punches to defeat the opponent.

The first person to score three points is deemed the winner of the match. A point is awarded for each valid hit. Hits can be placed on the abdomen, parts of the face, and sides of the trunk. There are three rounds for each match, with one minute of rest between each period. Points are deducted for penalties, which include illegal hits and unscrupulous behavior. It is very crucial to be defensive while sparring. Keeping one’s hands close to their face, guarding it, is a good, effective strategy. Anticipate the opponent’s next move instead of waiting for it to happen.

This involves watching the opponent very carefully. In order to be offensive as well, one must watch for holes in the opponent’s defense in order to know when to strike. It is vital that one is confident when entering a sparring match, and that they remain focused the entire time.

Taekwondo is not just a recreational activity that can improve one’s physical fitness, but it also improves one’s mental stamina and focus, in every area of life.
