how sports have impacted my life by Clint schulte

I am who I am today because of many things I have experienced, and people I have known, but sports have had the foremost effect on my life. I have played baseball since I was 4, basketball since I was 8, and football since I was 11, and I have learned more from sports than anything else.

School teaches us a lot, but my education would be incomplete if I didn't play sports. School gives us the knowledge we need to be successful in college and at work. Sports prepare us for life. Sports have taught me the value of determination, hard work, mental toughness, perseverance, being cooperative toward other people, and keeping my anger in check. I have learned all these things through sports, and so much more, but I think there are 2 things more important than all the rest.

I've learned to overcome adversity and handle failure. No matter what you do in life or what kind of person you must be able to overcome adversity. Life is one challenge after another, or else it would be boring. If you are overcome by adversity you will never reach your goals and be successful.

Take for example, a baseball player who strikes, and then strikes out twice more because he let it get to him. He gets angry and blames the umpire. The umpire tosses him. He throws his bat in the dugout. His coach yells at him. He quits the team. Later in life this same person gets married. His first child dies during child birth. He gets angry and blames his wife. He becomes abusive, and his wife yells at him. Eventually he leaves her and spends the rest of his life drinking and in and out of jail, all because he couldn't handle adversity.

I have learned about the fruits of hard work every time I've hit a home run, made a 3 pointer, or made a bone crushing hit. However I have learned much more from failure. Every time I've made the last out of a close loss, turned the ball over to lose the game, or missed a tackle at the goal line it has tested my ability to handle adversity and failure. I've learned how to learn from mistakes, and forget them. I know that I will be successful in life because I will never quit physically or mentally. That is how sports have impacted my life.
