citius, altius, fortius by christian cruz soza, miami sunset senior high school florida

I was born on February, 1994; months later, the 1994 FIFA World Cup was taking place. Shouts of “GOOOOL!”, “Arriba Brazil! “or “ARGENTINAAAAAA!”, used to wake me up in my Cuban home. When I grew up I started getting enthusiastic about sports because my mom had

influenced me by taking me to sporting events, watching sports on TV and actually practicing them. A couple of months before turning 6, I started practicing my first sport: Tae-kwon-do. It taught me not only physical abilities but also discipline, respect, and ethics. During my first years at school in Cuba I enjoyed playing cricket, baseball, basketball, volleyball, and soccer for my school. I did a lot of running as well when I was a little boy. I remember going to school and returning home running just for the pleasure of running.

Of all sports I have played, my favorite is soccer. Soccer fills my veins and heart with pride every time I play for my school. The first time I played soccer was in Cuba. When I look back at those days I smile at thinking that one day I was playing with lace-up boots, under the rain, in a field full of mud (I was extremely happy though) and then, months later, while playing for Miami Strike Force, my team was winning the “Memorial Day Shootout” Disney tournament. Those three days have been one of the most important and exciting moments of my life.

Another sport that has made me so proud of myself and my potential this course at school is Cross Country. I joined this team at my High School Miami Sunset because I wanted to try new things. I’m eager to learn about all sports.

What do I send
to the coach.

How do I
contact the
coach.

Obviously, in the first practice I was not as good as those in the varsity team but I tried my best to keep up with them. The following day the coach told me that the varsity team was talking about my sacrifice in the sport and that they liked how I was doing. That made me stronger mentally and every race I ran was with the thoughts of never being a quitter and always going forth no matter what obstacles I might find.

I would like my future to be involved with sports. Since I like medicine and sports, my studies will be focused in sports medicine. My mom has always talked to me about the importance of preventive medicine and in my opinion practicing sports is a good way of preventive diseases. When people practice sports they have more probability of being healthier than people who do not. I have idols in sports but when I heard about Julie Moss I felt something special. I admire her because even though her body could not go any further at a certain point, she never gave up and finished the competition. This is my way to understand life: never give up.

My advice to all children is: get involved in any sporting activity as soon as you can because practicing sports is not just health; it is a way to prove yourself that every day you can get higher, faster, and stronger.
