the PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES BY CODY LADD, NODAWAY VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL, GREENFIELD ia.

Many people think of professional sports as a way to get rich and become famous. Not only do fans and young athletes think this way but many of the professionals seem to feel that way. Many of today’s professional athletes show off their money with very expensive items purchased with the income made from their job.

I personally would rather watch most college sports because almost all of the players are playing because they love the sport they are in. That doesn’t necessarily mean the pro’s don’t love what they do but college athletes play for their team with true heart, not for the fame or the cash. Their attitudes may change once they enter the next level of play. For many, the fame and fortune get the best of them, but there are always the select few that don’t let either of those things decide who they are.

To me, football is the worst of all sports when it comes to these changes of the athletes. There are a lot of football players that will do anything to be the most well known player out there. All the way from things like changing their appearance to showboating after good plays. Some even think that just because they are a professional athlete and make millions of dollars a year, that they can get away with illegal acts. As we all know, most of them get caught and serve a punishment for their actions, but it still doesn’t get through to some people. Some of those athletes that get in trouble once, get in trouble numerous times after that.

Some athletes also use performance enhancing drugs to make them better. These athletes are the worst of all. A lot of them get off the hook way too easily. Baseball is the most known for steroid and HGH (human Growth Hormone) cases. There are some athletes that take these and don’t get caught or haven’t been caught yet. When I think about these players, I think of them as the ones who weren’t good enough to originally play the sport so they had to use drugs to make a name for themselves. That is the wrong way to make yourself better and all they are doing is hurting themselves. They could also be teaching children that something illegal is alright because it’s what the kid’s favorite player is doing.

The real athletes are the ones that don’t make a name for themselves by doing the things previously stated. Some of the best athletes ever to play sports are the ones that do their best to help make the team as good as possible. They aren’t the ones that worry about stats, they simply worry about being productive when it counts. They are also the players that make themselves better the right way, with practice. Every one of them likes earning the big dollars and being the best. That doesn’t mean they make stupid decisions or give of the wrong idea about what kind of athlete they really are. They simply do what they are good at and what they are getting paid to do.

This is how I think of professional athletes and how they act, as well as, how they should act. There are many athletes that fit one of my descriptions or the other, and that is what makes professional sports interesting. However, they should always consider the fact that they are being watched by millions of viewers and their actions are being judged by everyone that sees.
