Two Hinges, one knob, several screws, one frame and one
or two locks usually all come together to compose a door. If one of
these essential components decides not to wok, the door will not operate
correctly.
Along the same line, a softball team is made up of nine different positions each with its own purpose. If one position is unfilled the game does not go very smoothly. Softball is about teamwork and mental aspects of the game as much as it is about the physical part. Softball is not simply about hits, runs, wins and losses; it is about life lessons. At the beginning of a season teammates may be just that – people on the same team. At the end of a season a team should be composed of people who really know each other. They do not have to be best friends but a certain respect for each player should be there; a thought that without her centerfielder her team would not have won. Softball and any team sport rely on cooperation between players called teamwork. As a player, softball has taught me just how important teamwork is and it has helped me deal with things in life.
All throughout middle school and up to sophomore year in
high school I had trouble controlling my anger. On and off the softball
field I would find myself slamming and throwing things to release my
anger. |

Last summer something changed in me; the anger would still come but I learned how to take a deep breath and let the anger escape. Not only that but I could use it as incentive to do better next time, whether it was an at bat or pleasing my parents. This of all things has impacted me the most; because of softball and learning to handle my anger I have become a better person. This year my softball team went 19 and 3. Like the components of a door, we came together to overcome the loss of seven starting players from the previous year. I never had been much of a leader before, but my coach challenged me to fill the position so I stepped up. Without softball I would have missed out on a lot of good times, but more importantly I would not have learned some of the valuable life lessons that I have learned. I love everything about the game but my passion is fueled by the visible difference the game has made in my life. |
