SOFTBALL

Passion for softball by Jenna Alvarado, Bonita Vista high school, Chula Vista, California.

Thirteen years ago, I picked up my first bat. Thirteen years ago, I threw my first ball. Thirteen years ago, I stepped on the field for the first time. Thirteen years ago was the beginning of what became my favorite hobby for years to come.

Softball seemed to be the priority sport in my family ever since my dad became interested in coaching my sister at a young age. By the time I came around, it was obvious that it was to be my turn to step to the plate. With my coach of a dad, a teammate of a sister, and a supporter of a mom, I found myself falling in love with softball more and more each time I knotted my cleats and picked up that glove.

Starting at the age of four, I began my first season of rookie’s softball on the team, Little Grey Dolphins. Here’s this four-year-old inexperienced player who skipped T-ball and was about to take her first take at bat. Nobody had a clue what to expect. With not much success, I still walked off that field with a half-mile wide smile and a feeling of passion. This sport became my first addiction. After that moment, softball became my life. With two daughters dedicated to the same sport my family was committed to games and practices left and right. Whether it was a pre game, seasonal game, an all-star tournament, a state championship, or nationals, we were either in a car or plane all over the country. When we weren’t playing on the field, we were playing catch in the backyard, or hitting balls at the batting cages. This was a full time softball maniac family, and we didn’t want it any other way. As I progressed up to the mini minors, I was ecstatic. New girls, new rules, and new opportunities to improve my game awaited me.

It came to my Eighth season of my prolonged softball career when I was faced with an experience that changed my level of confidence and contentment for the rest of my season. It was a game against the toughest team in the league. The Black Panthers. We were tied zero to zero, the bottom of the fourth inning. With the most intimidating player walking to up the plate, I make my stance on third base with my glove snug on my left hand and my mindset on the ball. First pitch flies by. Strike one. Next pitch right down the middle. Strike two. All I could think to myself be this was it; we were going to take out the best player in the league. Third pitch anxiously reached the batter, then (bang) she slugs the ball out into right center field. She passes first, rounds second, and races the ball to third. She’s coming straight toward me. I’m ready. My feet set by third base and my glove aimed in the air toward the direction of the ball. It’s a close call. As a reach for the ball she begins her slide in the dirt. She’s sliding closer and closer to the base, and I catch the ball. I tagged her out! But instead of a jump up and down in celebration, I’m on the floor grabbing my ankle drowning in cries and tears. She seemingly had mistaken my ankle for the base. This was it. My career was over.

With numerous trips to the Emergency room and doctor, I could never look at the sport of softball ever again. No matter how hard I tried to regain the spirit to play it again, I could never find the strength or confidence to become that player with a big heart and dedication. It became one of the biggest hardships I had yet gone through in the spirit of sportsmanship; however the passion for softball shall forever be set in my mind.

The Rainbow By Breanna O'Neill. I can remember that day like it was yesterday. It was a rescheduled playoff softball game. The sky was cloudy and looked like it was going to down pour.
