softball life by jacqulyn e torrez. west mesa high school Albuquerque new Mexico

It was the last inning of the game and we needed to get the final out. The bases were loaded. The other team’s best batter was up. “Pow!” She hit the ball right to me. “Oh no, here it comes,” I thought. It hit the ground and rolled to me, I picked it up. To get the out I threw it to . . .

In softball there are a lot of things you can do to get the out. My coach always says, “Get the fastest out. Throw it to the easiest base.”  Most of the time, the easiest and fastest out is to throw the ball to first base.

As a team that is what we learn. The team in softball is the most important aspect of the game. It is so important because you can’t play the field by yourself; it takes the whole team. The team is also important because when you are feeling down or are having a bad game, they are there to pick you up and tell you things will be alright.

I think softball is the best sport. However, not everybody views it that way. There are many things that are good about softball and about teams, but what about baseball? Are there things there that make baseball better than softball or vice versa?

Softball and baseball are the same, yet they are also different. One difference is that softball players use different uniforms. In baseball most of the time players wear pants and metal shoes, but softball players wear shorts and ordinary shoes. The sizes of the balls are not the same: in softball the ball is big, but in baseball it is small. It is the same for the fields: one is bigger than the other. Softball is more recreational than baseball. The coaches are typically nice for softball, but in baseball most of the coaches are hard on the players. Baseball is much more competitive than softball.

I love softball. I grew up with softball because most my family members played the game. My mom almost had me on the softball field: her water broke when she was playing.

Softball is also important to me because the field is the one place where I can go and not have to worry about life, family, and problems. I also love softball because it has kept me out of trouble. There were so many times that depressing things happened to me, and softball was the first outlet I turned to. Softball lets me release much of my pain, hurt, and anger.

I threw the ball all the way from third base to first base. “BAM!” I got the out. The game was over. “Yes you did it!” That was what the team said. But I said in reply, “No we did it!” We had won the game with a score of 17 to 10. We have never seen our coach so happy--that is until we won state.

The Big Play-Off Game by Melissa Nagel. It was the first play off game of my sophomore year at Spaulding High School and we were playing Manchester Memorial. Manchester was hosting the game and we were about to play another magnificent game of softball.

The battle for recognition of the wonderful game of softball is over. Softball has won a place among America's foremost sports." The recognition of the sport increased tremendously when softball was finally accepted as an Olympic sport in 1991.

Americans who are wondering just how much physical activity is enough may find an answer in the Physical Activity Pyramid. A simple guide to prescription for physical activity, the program includes some information that individuals may not be including in their exercise assessment.

In 1887, George Hancock, a journalist for the Chicago Board of Trade, invented softball. He designed the game as a form of indoor baseball on a cold winter day inside the warm Farragut Boat Club.
