SOFTBALL

JUST A GAME BY ERIKA MUELLER STEILACOOM HIGH SCHOOL WASHINGTON

The smell of the freshly cut grass; the exhilaration of diving through the damp outfield in pre-game warm ups to get your legs working and your heart pumping; the goal of not smudging the seamlessly perfect chalk lines before we take the field; the butterflies and anxiousness I get before every game regardless of the number of people in the stands.

Fastpitch is not just what I play, an extracurricular to pass the time, another letter for my varsity jacket, or even a way to meet new friends. I love this game and have experienced every emotion through my playing. It may just be a game to most, but to me, this game is my life. It is what I live for.

This game has made me beyond competitive. It has taught me to accept my own faults, but to never settle for anything less than my best. It has allowed me an outlet for stress; I feel remarkable when I throw a ball over sixty miles per hour to my first baseman and hear her glove pop as her mitt clenches the ball. It has brought many amazing people into my life. I have also learned to build relationships with people who think and act differently than I do. I have coped with disappointment and learned that positivity remains the best way to enter situations, especially ones where winning is the unanimous goal. This simple game has changed my life. It has made me into the person I am and continues to help guide me through tough decisions and everyday circumstances.

The game might not always turn out the way I plan, though. Yet since it is a team sport I am able to share my experiences with the eight other individuals on the field. Each of us goes in fighting our own personal battles in order to contribute to a complete team effort.

I have mastered improving my game by absorbing advice and information from my coaches and teammates each time we meet. Whether verbally taught a technique or just from studying someone else on my team, at a tournament, or on the television, I feel that you can never know everything there is to know about an ever changing game.

This game is what I do and what I do well. It is one of the only things that can get me out of bed at 4 o’clock in the morning without slamming down the snooze button more than twice. Throughout my busy, demanding, and somewhat hectic life, I have learned to have fun. Yes – learned. Sometimes I set goals for myself that seem so unreachable, but I have discovered that these goals help push me. I believe that improvement can only be accomplished if the focus and determination is put forth. That is how I play this game and that is how I live my life.

To me this game is great. This game is rewarding, but challenging. It is difficult, intricate, and complicated, but so simple: two teams, nine players, four bases. I’ve gained many of the qualities I pride myself on: fairness and camaraderie, then focus, enthusiasm, and being a hard worker. Learning to persevere and also to become a leader and take initiative. This game is my passion. This game is my life. And to me, what I like to think of as my life, is anything but just a game.

In 1887, George Hancock, a journalist for the Chicago Board of Trade, invented softball. He designed the game as a form of indoor baseball on a cold winter day inside the warm Farragut Boat Club.

The battle for recognition of the wonderful game of softball is over. Softball has won a place among America's foremost sports." The recognition of the sport increased tremendously when softball was finally accepted as an Olympic sport in 1991.

The Big Play-Off Game by Melissa Nagel. It was the first play off game of my sophomore year at Spaulding High School and we were playing Manchester Memorial. Manchester was hosting the game and we were about to play another magnificent game of softball.
