COLLEGE BOUND BY JAMIE YANIGA SOUTHWEST MIAMI SENIOR HIGH FLORIDA

Ever since eighth grade softball has been a big part of my life. It was hard at first because usually in order to go far in such a competitive sport one needs to start out at an early age. Like my sister, she started at the age of five and now plays Division I softball for George Washington University.

I, on the other hand started at age thirteen, much later than the usual softball athlete. I worried that I was wasting my time and my parent’s money by playing the sport. But, the longer I stayed the more I began to love the sport and the friends I gained from our love of the game.

The summer before my freshman year of high school I joined the Waves fastpitch softball team and was lucky enough to be coached by Maria Alvarez. She has helped so many before me get great starts at college. She loves all her athletes so dearly that she tries so hard to help get us all get great opportunities at life. My sister, who has won many awards for her outstanding accomplishment in all the sports she has been involved with, was lost in her search for a college. Luckily, Maria was there for my sister, like all her players, and was able to give my sister an opportunity to play Division I softball at George Washington. She has been Player of the week multiple times, along with breaking many records statistically, and has enjoyed being a Colonial all the while.

Playing softball for my high school has been so rewarding. I gained many friends and almost had the opportunity to win a Regional Championship and travel to Tampa to compete for a State Title, something my sister has had the honor of receiving. This past fall season for the Waves at The Rising Stars Exposure Tournament in Davie, after contacting many colleges to visit our games and with help from my amazingly loving coach and sister, I was given an offer from the George Washington University coach. Being a GDub fan for four years and visiting the campus, I was excited to know that I might have a chance to be a Colonial myself.

Sadly, I would not be able to play alongside my sister on the field but she has decided to stay another year and play Volleyball for the Colonials. I was at first worried about traveling so far from home but my worries have lessoned because, even though no one was there for my sister, she will be there for me and help me if that very common feeling of home sickness creeps up on me. Though she would only be with me for one year that will hopefully be enough for me to make it on my own in the big city of Washington D.C.

MOST athletic scholarships are not "full-ride" they are partial only. College softball is classed as a equivalency sport by the NCAA.
