A YEAR OF REGRET BY KYLIE WRIGHT, GETTYSBURG AREA HIGH SCHOOL PENNSYLVANIA

SOCCER ESSAY

Sports have always played a crucial role in my life for as long as I can remember.  Growing up as a college soccer coaches’ and athletic director’s daughter has a lot to do with my love of competition and exhilaration of victory.

My fondest memories of my childhood are playing in soccer tournament after tournament, feeling the rush of adrenaline as I would dribble down the sideline, and hanging out with my best friends afterwards.  To me, that was all I ever knew, and I loved it more than anything else.  When my freshman year of high school rolled around, however, my feelings for the game of soccer slowly changed.

The first time I saw the high school girls’ soccer team play was a bitterly cold spring day in 2005.  I remember being so eager to go and watch the girls who I knew I would join in the coming year.  Yet, as I looked out at the intimidating girls across the field, an entirely new feeling engulfed me.  They all seemed so big, fast and incredibly skilled, and I instantly felt self-conscious about my own soccer abilities.  When the time finally came to sign up for try outs for the team, I decided to turn to track instead. Although my love for the game remained, I allowed my fear to take control of my decision.  Soccer had always been such a major part of my family’s life, and I could see my dad, more than anyone, try and hide his disappointment in my decision.

After a few days of track practice had gone by, all participants were required to decide in what they would “specialize.” Reluctantly, I decided to join my best friend in running long distance.  Every day I was told to run up to five miles, and I would pass the soccer fields as I would begin each run.  I would look out across the fields to see the skilled players running drills and having an amazing time doing it.  As both seasons progressed, the players would get better and better, and the team seemed to get even closer.  It was during these times that I would realize that I had made a mistake by quitting the sport that I loved.

By quitting soccer, I had allowed fear to get the best of me.  That year I was, by far, the worst runner on my track team and finished last in most races.  If I had only toughed out the soccer tryouts, I realize now that I would have succeeded in becoming an excellent player that could thrive in high school soccer.

The biggest lesson I learned was to never give up on something that I have a passion for.  Life is too short to let chances and opportunities pass me by.  Although I do not play soccer nearly as much today, I hope to slowly bring it back into my life.

The contemporary history of soccer spans more than 100 years. It all began in 1863 in England, when rugby football and association football branched off on their different courses and the world's first football association was founded.

My Mentality by Luis Jimenez. Throughout my life I have always been a tense individual, even for the little things that life presents. When it comes to soccer, it is hard to explain the degree of anxiety that I feel before a big game.

Going For Goal by Amanda Tucker.  Although most people think that good soccer players only require the physical characteristics of skill, speed, and endurance, there are also many psychological qualities that are equally necessary.

The game of soccer is reputedly English in origin and there are many legends concerning its first appearance. For example, in both Kingston-on-Thames and Chester, the story goes that the game was played for the very first time with the severed head of a vanquished Danish prince.

True Life Soccer by Marguerite Puanani Jackson.  Soccer, like any other sport, is a game of chance. The game ball will either make you or break you, bring you victory, or defeat. The anticipation before the looming battle ahead is almost unbearable.

The number of strength-training sessions needed to achieve strength gains has to do with two equally important factors: Progressive resistance exercise and adequate recovery time.
