SOCCER ESSAY

When I was a freshman in high school, I joined the soccer team with high expectations. I had been playing club soccer for several years, and at that point high school ball was the next step for me when the fall season came. The program that I was about to enter was reputable for discipline and winning seasons.

Sure enough, the training was difficult, and by mid-September all of my teammates and I were well-conditioned and hardy, but most of all eager.
Our soccer team played against some decent competition in our region of Southwest Missouri, but this year, we planned to take a trip up to St. Louis to play one of the state’s top ranked teams. Our coach informed us that they were the reigning state champions, but he assured us that that was no reason to be intimidated. The whole bus ride upstate, I could tell that all of my teammates were nervous, and I, for one, imagined that the team we were about to play would be some of the best competition I would ever see.

Sure enough, when we arrived I noticed that everything from their field to their equipment was top notch. The school I go to is a public institution and it could never be financed like the well-to-do private school that we were visiting. Also, I was aware that most of the kids on the other team played on very prestigious club teams in the spring. Needless to say, so many things were running through my mind that had the potential to destroy my mental game.

The warm up was really a blur because of all the distractions, and before I knew it the kick off commenced. I was playing midfield, which meant I was doing a lot of running and dribbling. I was hard pressed to keep up with the lightning speed of the other team because every move they made was extremely agile. Like a good investment, our discipline started to show in our play, and we remained tied with this highly-skilled team for about thirty minutes.

All of a sudden, one of our center midfielders had a stunning run down the middle and then scored a goal from at least twenty five yards out. In the second half, we put another one in their net and they answered that with a goal of their own. With about five minutes to go, I thought we would end up winning because everyone was still playing with intensity and defending successfully. Almost like a sad movie ending, one of our defenders was played the ball in the back, and with one ungraceful kick he sliced it into our own goal. The score ended two to two, and though we were so close to victory and though we were in such a competitive mindset, we shook our opponents hands and told the now-depressed defender that it could have happened to any of us. This one experience gave me perspective on compassion and friendship.
