TRUE LIFE: SOCCER by MARGUERITE PUANANI JACKSON
SANTA PAULA HIGH SCHOOL california.

My whole life, I’ve been constantly searching for the ultimate thrill, the ultimate challenge, the supreme game, and little did I know, that I had already stumbled upon my holy grail in the form of soccer. What started out as a selfish desire to start a collection of prized trophies turned into a burning passion over they years.

No theme park could compare to the height of emotions and adrenaline rush at a close game. Five minutes never felt so long when you’re only up by one, and the opposing team is uncomfortably close to your side of the field. But soccer has turned into more than a source of fun, it has played a major factor in my life and has taught me more about my morals and values in life than church or school ever has.

It helps me lead a healthy life style. Woe to the athlete who dares to enter onto the field with inferior fitness. Even though I loathed those sessions of conditioning, I rejoiced in the game because of it. It is always a race to the ball, and it would always come down to who had poured more heart and soul into those agonizing hours of running and sprinting. I made sure to always give it my all and run my soul ragged. When the competition is at its peak in situations like this, I lose all sense of humanity and give in to animal instincts. I make sure to leave my manners on the sidelines during the game. But when the game is over, I remember my duty as an athlete, and comply to the rules of sportsmanship. After all, we are all united under the love for the game, and one must remember, it’s nothing personal. I’ve taken this lesson to my everyday life, and to reduce my chances of losing, I also make sure I am prepared for life when it comes to things like tests and scholarships.

Soccer, like any other sport, is a game of chance. The game ball will either make you or break you, bring you victory, or defeat. The anticipation before the looming battle ahead is almost unbearable.

Once that whistle blows, you feel the impulse to run to the top and take the ball all the way, but years of strict training and strategy keeps you back, and hones you in on your specific duty. As a result, your team wins with finesse and skill…sometimes. Every team has an off day, where passes aren’t connected, the touches are off, or shots just don’t go in, or the opposing team is simply superior, and they walk away with a victory, and newly found grudging respect. This is also true in life, which also, ultimately, is one big competition. Because of this sport, I’ve learned to admit defeat and accept victory graciously.

Soccer is also an outdoor sport, so weather is also a factor. A perfect day for a picnic is not a day for soccer. Give me a cloudy day, even some rain, and you’ve got the perfect weather for the game. Regardless of the conditions, everyone always manages to rise to the occasion. Whether in the cool mornings, the sweltering heat of midday, or in freezing cold in the winter, the game is always played and a victor is always declared. The sound of the crowd is usually enough to get you pumped. Whether they are antagonizing jeers from the opposition, or cheers of support from your side, it’s enough to get your energy going.

Either driven by a need to put the other team to silence, or follow through for your fans, the level of your game goes up. Life always has its obstacles, I have definitely learned to rise to the occasion in every aspect of life, no matter what the obstacles are, because of soccer.

This sport of the world has become my addiction, it has been embedded skin deep, and the spirit of competition runs freely in my veins. My four year old self would never have been able to predict what I was getting out of playing soccer. It has definitely turned into more than a want of a plastic trophy.
