  SOCCER ESSAYS

The senior year season by tim engle c s lewis academy Newberg Oregon

I never planned on liking soccer.

A half-hearted season in 2nd grade hardly left an impression on me, and throughout middle school and most of my high school, I had no desire whatsoever for the sport.

Truth be told, I really never had a desire for any sort of sport; the only exercise I got was making myself tired on a treadmill at the gym. During those years, exercise was not an enjoyment, it was a necessity just like eating and sleeping. But after my soccer season during senior year, it has become a passion.

Competition is something that drives me to be my best (and win, if I can), and it was this that brought me to soccer the beginning of my senior year. I had hardly played the sport, and it had been so long I could barely remember the basics, but it was competition and the quest for a fun new outlet that brought me out to that field in mid-August. I had met the coach beforehand, and I knew most of the players from last year at school, so I knew that fitting in wouldn’t be a problem. It was the game itself that would take some adjustment.

The first couple of weeks were the bare bones of the sport: drills. It was a helpful experience, but I was very anxious to proceed to the scrimmages, where my true spirit for the sport of soccer came alive. My position as defender required my full attention, and every time an opposing player had the ball in my quarters, I was set on getting that ball and carrying it to the other side at all costs.

These scrimmages were the building blocks of my hope for winning and for the joy of the game. And although our league consisted of teams that were much more experienced than ours, I continued to keep an excited attitude and a hopeful approach. It was my first season, and I embraced the challenge of striving to do my best for each and every game.

Our very last game was the pinnacle of my soccer season. Although we lost on another team’s field, the fervor and energy we carried was incredible. I poured my heart and soul into that game. I’m proud to say that I didn’t let in a single goal, and I almost made the opposing strikers afraid to get possession of the ball. Those last twenty minutes are something I will always remember, and every time I play a sport I will try to replicate that performance.

As the season came to a close, I realized how far I had come. I had become a very good defender through determination and passion for the game. I began to miss the whole experience of practicing on the wide field with the faded lines after school hours.

I knew I would miss the funny stories of the coach and the encouraging comments from team members. I would miss the games, whether home or away, where honor and talent were on the line. The memories of my senior year will always be rewarding, for I know that I not only found the sport of soccer, I discovered the joy of sports itself.
