Women's rowing by Ashley Price-Dyment, Lowell High School,
Lowell Massachusetts.
At first, I thought crew would be an opportunity to eat free
food, wear nifty spandex uniforms, and meet unusual faces at
Lowell High school. I was not considered the athletic type, so
trying out for the crew team was a major step for me. I was
headed towards uncharted territory, something I had never
experienced before. I had no idea that crew would change the
next four years of my life. Crew has helped me get where I am
today; it has influenced the shaping of my body, mind, and
heart. With the oar, I have transformed my body into a
machine. The synchronized and constant motions have trained
every muscle in my body. Getting to this point has taken a lot
of sweat. I have learned to keep running despite my muscles
screaming in anguish; I’ve learned to pull my oar through water
pristinely, barely making a splash. I have put in hours of power
pieces and technique work and it always seems to pay off on race
day. The last two hundred meters in the race are always the
hardest; my chest burns, my legs are sore, and I throw the
water. But the last ten strokes I beast through. It has taken a
lot of focus but I ignore the little voice in my head that tells
me to stop and rest.
“Crew is life…everything else is just details.” I do not
think I thought about that motto when I first joined. For eight
seasons, I have spent thirty hours a week rowing. Managing my
time around my hectic schedule has become a habit and second
nature to me. And my time for doing academic work is precious.
Unlike most teenagers, I do not have the luxury of spending an
afternoon on my couch browsing through channels and
procrastinating. Instead, I do my calculus homework on a picnic
table and wait to cheer on my teammates and peers. Joining this
team has strengthened my principles and tested my dedication.
From waking up at four in the morning to rowing in forty-degree
weather, I am fully dedicated to the rower lifestyle.

At first, I thought I would only have to talk to rowers at races and
practices, but I have learned to care for my teammates. If I see
someone struggling to rig a boat or carry oars, I immediately offer
a helping hand. We hang out before practice, during practice, and
after practice. After spending enough time with my teammates, I have
started to think of the crew team as my second family. I look to my
coaches for guidance, not only in rowing but in life in general. My
teammates are siblings that I compete with daily. We are each a
thread of silk; when woven together with time, we have the ability
to create a masterpiece. I cannot tell you why I took this leap of
faith and joined the crew team. However, I can honestly say that I
am grateful I did. Crew transformed my body from a chubby little
freshman to a lean, mean rowing machine. I have had to push myself
in order to achieve goals that I never thought I could accomplish.
And best of all, crew has helped me develop friendships that I will
keep with me for the rest of my life. It is ironic how crew has
transformed every aspect of my life; I was a naïve freshman joining
the crew team for all the wrong reasons, but as of now, I am a
senior who is thankful for the choices I have made. I am thankful
for crew.
