A HEALTHY MIND IN A HEALTHY BODY

BY KAELAH FARBER HOMESTEAD HIGH SCHOOL MEQUON WI.

A gymnasium alone cannot create a winner. They must be driven by a force from within. I am a student who has been involved in martial arts since age four. I have studied Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Japanese Karate, and Muay Thai Kickboxing; attained a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, a green belt in Hapkido, and a brown belt in Israeli Kavanah as well as Israeli Hisardut (Survival).

Through Tae Kwon Do I was able to win tournaments, learn to count in Korean, and perform gravity-defying board-breaks, while Hapkido taught me how to use acupressure points, momentum and fluidity of motion. Through Israeli Kavanah, the most effective of my practices, I gained street sense and learned defense maneuvers against attacks such as chokes, headlocks, wrist-grabs, tackles, and even attacks involving sticks, knives and guns.

These sports improve cardiovascular and respiratory health, endurance, agility, and even elongate life expectancy. A shocking 67 percent of Americans are overweight or obese. Soon, for the first time in history, today’s children might have a shorter life expectancy than their parents’. By practicing martial arts daily, my 47 year-old father has been able to deal with his arthritis while still being able to perform the splits and last two hours on an elliptical machine.

Even with my exercise-induced asthma, by practicing this sport, I’ve improved and conditioned my cardiovascular health, my endurance, and my respiratory problems as well as keeping fit and toned. At the beginning of my junior year in high school, I decided to participate in the swim team for the first time. Though I still had much to learn, my body was able to handle the difficult workouts rather easily, thanks to my many years of sports and conditioning. In addition to physical enhancement I achieved exactly what the Hebrew word “Kavanah” means- intent, focus, control. All of these martial arts have embedded in me a sense of pride, respect, integrity, and control. Indeed, through martial arts I have developed a true appreciation for the importance of attaining a balance of body, mind and spirit. I try to live by the motto “Nefesh Beriah Begoof Beree” – a healthy mind in a healthy body. These are some of the forces that drive me to excel in all areas of my life, such as school, religion, friendships, family, and even other sports. I have an instructor license in Israeli self-defense, which I utilize by teaching seminars around the community for women and teens. Last year, in addition to these seminars, I began a Safety Club at my school to educate other teens about safety with dating, vehicles, internet, and on the street.

I believe it is my duty as a self-defense practitioner and instructor to educate and help others to improve their health, confidence, self-esteem and ability to protect themselves and their families. Now my peers apply their knowledge of self-defense to other facets of their lives, such as: driving home alone at night, surfing the web, or even walking through a mall.

Martial arts and martial sports have made such an important impact on my life. Now those forces within me compel and push me to reach my goals every day. I know that my knowledge and talent in self-defense will assist others to become secure and safe, as well. Each person’s ability to practically and effectively protect themselves on the street will decrease the huge number of victimized teens per year and create a safe environment for everyone. While I study the self-defense system of Hisardut-Survival my goal is not simply to survive but to live well and help others to do the same. Due to my lifetime involvement in this sport, I am confident that by using focus, intent, purpose and mindfulness I will succeed at everything I attempt.
