Don't go through life without goals by Jessica barofsky. freehold township high school new jersey

Ice Hockey has always been more than a recreational sport for me, it has become a passion. It started with an NHL game featuring the Florida Panthers in Fort Lauderdale, FL where I began to grow interested in the fascinating sport of hockey.

I loved the energy in the National Car Rental Center, where the crowd chanted “We will, we will, rock you!” and the air was crisp with excitement and joy. It was this moment that forever sparked the flame that ignited my fervor for hockey.

Upon the return to my home in New Jersey I had asked my mom an essential question that changed my life forever, I asked, “Mom, which sport is harder: Ice hockey or roller hockey?” She thought about it for a moment and confidently replied, “Ice hockey is more difficult, why do you ask?” I hesitated for a moment, looked down at my feet and then looked back up at my mom with a smile as I replied, “Mom, then that’s what I want to do. I want to play ice hockey.”

Whenever my sister was brought to the ice rink to figure skate, I would wander off to the other rink and watch the big boys play ice hockey. As I pressed my little nose against the glass boards and peeked over the ledge on my tip toes, I watched in amazement, the smooth movement of that little black rubber thing glide with ease from one stick to another.

As I stood there watching, I wondered if I would ever be able to keep up with the other players my age when I would start playing in the house league at my local rink, but nevertheless, I was more than excited, I was ecstatic.

A few weeks before my first ice hockey game my mom and dad took me to buy equipment. For me, I felt like a kid in the candy store; it was an amazing feeling. With the right tools, a tool man can do his job sufficiently, so my parents and I figured that with the right equipment, I would succeed as a player. As I sat in the car, I immediately put on my new CCM helmet and put my tiny VIC gloves on and when I got home I put my whole uniform on and walked around my house.

The morning had come; I was too excited to sleep, so I woke myself up at 5:30 AM. I ran into my parent’s bedroom and woke them up. We were in the car shortly thereafter for my 6:45 AM game.  When I walked into the locker room I felt butterflies in my stomach and my dad helped me put on my equipment. As I walked onto the ice for the first time with a helmet on and a stick in my hands, I felt invincible. I skated well with the other boys and week by week, I grew a stronger hockey player. I had even begun to score goals, more and more goals as the weeks went by. There was nothing I enjoyed better than waking up early Sunday mornings to play ice hockey, nothing.

Ten years later I find myself as a passionate female ice hockey player. I still share the same feeling every time I walk onto the ice now as I did when I had first begun playing. I would not be where I am today in the hockey world if it wasn’t for my parents who supported me since I was a “mite.” There were people who had doubted my playing, but I never doubted myself. Without the support of my family I would not have gone as far as I have today. Ever since I started playing hockey, I have played for house leagues, travel teams, roller hockey leagues, an independent girl’s hockey team, and I have participated in a national ice hockey tournament for consecutive years. I plan on continuing to play ice hockey in college. The sport has made me a stronger person; mentally and physically.

When I sit in school, I daydream about hockey, and when I am home, I find myself procrastinating from homework by playing knee hockey. Some days, I go from school, to a high school tennis match, to hockey practice, and arrive at home as late as eight at night. Hockey and athletics have always felt “right” to me and I would not give it up for anything. My passion is ice hockey, and I am dedicated to it.
