“Bumps, Lacrosse Sticks, Angels, and Me” by Elyan Shor Bonita Vista High School California

The spring of my freshman year of high school, an opportunity that would greatly change me and my life as a whole fell out of the sky-- literally. The fifth period bell had just rung and I was on my way to the lunch tables to eat lunch and hang out with my friends.

I navigated my way around the clusters of kids crowding the hall, when suddenly the six-foot tall star of the basketball team bumped me and sent me flying into a wall. I rubbed my head and was regaining myself, when suddenly, a flyer came drifting down from the sky and landed next to me on the floor. I picked it up and was about to throw it away, when I realized what it said: “Girls Lacrosse Tryouts- Tuesday after school”. I had always been an athletic girl, but it was my first year at this school and I had yet to prove my athletic abilities. Besides, I wasn’t exactly a social butterfly and I desperately wanted to establish myself a little better with my peers. I stashed away the flyer and went on the rest of the day.

That night, I thought about what a new sport could do for me. It would help me meet new friends and it could be a challenge (I never back down from a challenge). I decided to go for it. Tryouts came and went, and to my surprise, I picked up the game fast and made the team.

As of many young girls, however, I suffered from a few self-confidence issues. Growing up I was always teased about having chicken legs and (to quote someone directly) being “too tall” and therefore “not normal” like other girls. To top it off, I had only a few friends at my new school and often felt that I wasn’t “cool” like everyone else.

This is where Lacrosse came in and changed me. I made tons of new friends on the team that valued my personality and my skills and helped me overcome my introverted manner and my self-conscious fears. Also, the Varsity Team girls were an inspiration to me and helped me develop a sense of drive to work harder and better myself. It even turned out that my long legs were perfect for speeding past opponents, and my height was a source of jealousy to the others as I could intercept high passes.

Overall, joining the Lacrosse team truly helped me and impacted me. Not only do I keep active and stay healthy by playing the sport, but I have also learned to love myself and embrace who I am. Furthermore, my team helped me break out of my quiet shell and I am no longer afraid to show my personality and make new friends.  Even though I look back at the fateful day when a flyer changed my life, and I realize that in reality it didn’t fall from the sky (the impact of my slam into the wall caused the flyer to dislodge off of some scotch-tape), I still like to give thanks to whichever angel sent me a gift that ultimately allowed me to find and love myself.

US Lacrosse, which oversees the rules for girls lacrosse at all levels, including high school, recently changed its rules and endorsed the use of protective eyewear.

The National Lacrosse League's Minnesota Swarm has recruited five players at the  NLL Entry Draft at the Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta.
