GOLF ESSAYS

a grip on life: fearlessly swinging towards a dream, by giannina gonzalez, stafford high school Falmouth Virginia.

Some things just come naturally. “You’re a natural,” was always one of the first remarks I’d hear from coaches and instructors. It soon occurred to me that those comments implied a natural ability; however, it took me several years to understand how special those words really were. My talent was showcased particularly in swimming, and I realized I had a gift.

The first obstacle came from my teammates who would tell me to go easy because I would make them look bad by doing so well. I chose to ignore their comments, but I found myself in a dilemma. My teammates were trying to keep me from setting a higher standard. It was then that I faced my biggest challenge. I knew what was right, but was afraid to overcome the challenge of being myself. I did not want to be different. I wanted to fit in. I wanted to mold myself into something else, something that I knew I couldn’t be.

I could either abandon my talent and fit in or overcome the opposition and be myself. I chose to fit in, but could not do so. I was bored, restless, and unhappy. I saw the effort turn to waste as I became an equal. I was bland; my talent dripping away as I wrung out all that made me different. I discovered that sinking down to the bottom brought me closer to drowning into the ordinary. Something did not fit right and my discomfort was all too visible. I was no longer setting personal record and my teammates and coach were upset. I missed seeing my time light up on the score board as I was the first to touch the wall.

I wanted it back and I knew how to do it. I went back to doing what was natural to me. I didn’t listen to what anyone would say or what they wanted. I simply did what was natural to me. I couldn’t try to please anyone because than I would not be setting my own goals; others would. I found that by setting my own goals I would do everything I needed to make them a reality the motivation would come naturally.

Turning in the opposite direction from what others were telling me to do was the most difficult challenge I ever faced. I applied what I learned outside the water. I discovered that being true to one’s self is the most difficult, yet rewarding experience. The obstacles I faced and my decision to defy serve as the foundation to the challenges I face today. Now without hesitation I dive into my own pool of dreams. During my junior year I switched my focus from swimming to golf. I would immerse myself in the game every day, my practice soon paid off. I was on the course so much I would even study in between shots with note cards to I could stay out on the course as long as I could. I went to VHSL Girls State Championship my freshman year, however my hard work came together my senior year where I surprised myself by placing 23rd. I participated in Boy’s Regionals where I placed second among the girls present at Regionals.

Many of the morals I learned in swimming folded over into golf. Likewise many of the virtues, values and lessons I learned in both golf and swimming have folded into the events in my everyday life. Patience is one of the most valuable virtues I have learned from golf. Not every shot is going to be perfect and that is why patience is so valuable in golf. In my day to day activates I am often surprised when others compliment me on my patience, it is now second nature. These, among many other traits have helped me develop into the person I am today. Through golf I have fearlessly swung into a new chapter of my life.
