Super Bowl XXXVI by Jake Reardon, St. Andrew's School, Barrington, Rhode Island.

My ardent dedication to watching professional sports began in the tumultuous year of 2001. In a year plagued with fear resulting from the unforgettable attacks which occurred a mere four months prior to Super Bowl XXXVI, a team that seemed to be in a constant state of dormancy woke from its sleep and gave birth to the most powerful sports dynasty of the new century.

This team that arose from the panic and hysteria of the worst year in the history of our country would come to personify the resilient and unbending will of true American Patriots. The season started off just as any other New England Patriot season would. It began miserably. After beginning the season with two losses, the lone bright spot that had existed over the last decade for the Patriots, Drew Bledsoe, was gone.

The Pro-bowl quarter back suffered a sheared blood-vessel from a devastating hit during a week three game against the division rival New York Jets. His replacement would come in the form of a second year quarter back drafted the previous year in the sixth round, named Tom Brady. A backup quarterback who had only thrown three passes in the previous season.

Brady’s baptism by fire would prove to be a shaky one indeed as the Patriots stumbled to a five-hundred start through ten games. They began to look like a Super Bowl Team as they went on to run the table for the remainder of the regular season. A euphoric sense of pride swept through New England as this formerly abysmal franchise marched into the playoffs brimming with momentum.

This wild card team would have its fair share of stories throughout the playoffs as well. Most memorable, the unforgettable snow game, when with the help of a controversial no fumble call and a clutch Adam Vinateri game winning field goal in the atrocious white-out conditions that are synonymous with a New England Winter, the Patriots would defeat the heavily favored Oakland Raiders and qualify for the AFC Championship Game one week later in Pittsburg. Once again the Patriots would play the role of the underdog. A team with literally no history going up against one of the most historically prolific teams in the history of North American Professional Sports.

Once again New England proved critics wrong and came out victorious. Now they were to move on to the game that counted most. The St. Louis Rams had breezed through the playoffs. They had pretty much breezed through everything in the season of 2001, on the back of Kurt Warner, Marshall Faulk, Tory Holt, and Isaac Bruce, this formidable offense gained itself the moniker, “The Greatest Show On Turf.” The Patriots entered this game a fourteen point underdog. It was a common trend. The Patriots were underdogs. They accepted this role and they fed off of it. So when they sat at the thirty-eight yard line with seven seconds left in the game ready to seal the game and imprint themselves into football lore forever, they had finally accomplished what they had initially set out to do.

They had proved everybody wrong. Not even the biggest New England blowhard can truthfully say that they predicted the Patriots winning the Super Bowl that year. Even their own fans had been proven wrong. The team had defied all odds, and in the process all logic to complete their journey. This team displayed not only the sheer unpredictability of sports, but also demonstrated the pivotal role motivation can play in sports. A team that clearly had lesser skills and talents was able to rally themselves and defeat teams with superior players. The hungry underdog was the image that was associated with these Patriots and it was the image that catapulted them to the advanced level at which they operate today.

This team showed America that even during the darkest time in the history of our country, with a combination of motivation and unity, nothing can overcome the unbending will of a true American Patriot.
