First Hand Perspective as Football Foes by Kerrigan Cain,
Archbishop Hoban High School akron ohio.
I wake up at six in the morning, and I know that
the biggest football game of the year is only twelve hours away. The
game I am talking about is the Hoban vs. St. Vincent-St. Mary
football game at the Rubber Bowl. This is the most important game of
the regular season and whoever wins receives an intangible reward,
pride for their school. Since this is such a big game, once I wake
up, the nerves begin and there is no going back to sleep now. It is
game day and this is a day in the life of a Hoban Knight football
player leading up to the Hoban vs. St. Vincent-St. Mary football
game.
After waking up and knowing the game is mere hours
away, all I can do is get dressed and ready for school. Since it is
game day, it is required that all football players wear ties to
school. So I put on my dress slacks, button down shirt, and tie.
Once I am ready for school, I place all of my school and football
gear into my car and drive away. Leaving for school is another step
closer to the biggest game of my life. To go
along with the biggest game of the year, there is the biggest day of
school today, Mum Day. Today no one is permitted to talk, not even
the administration and faculty. The seniors spend the night at Hoban
on Thursday and decorate the halls with blue and gold confetti,
streamers, and banners. Arriving at school, I am overwhelmed with
the decorations and silence. I see my friends, but I am not able to
speak with them so we write notes to each other. |

Classes start
and teachers usually write on the board or have handouts prepared
for the day. When a class period ends, it is so quiet in the halls
all that is heard are the sound of feet walking over streamers,
banners, and lockers opening. Finally, after an eternity, my last
class ends, and it is time for the big pep rally. The Mum Day pep
rally is without a doubt the craziest and loudest pep rally of the
year. As students file into the bleachers it is still dead silent,
until the cheerleaders start a cheer and the gym erupts with loud
and screaming students. Once the pep rally ends, school is over, and
the game is so close I can almost hear the crowd screaming.
Now that school is over, it is time for all the
pre-game activities. First is the pre-game meal, filled with
chicken, pasta, salad, cake, cookies, brownies, and Gatorade. Once
everyone has eaten a hearty meal, the whole team assembles into the
chapel and we pray together, asking for safety and assistance in our
game. After we pray, we head down to the field to pack our gear onto
the busses. Then, after everyone is sure they have not forgotten
anything, we load the busses and leave for the Rubber Bowl. The bus
ride to the stadium is as quiet as it is during school earlier in
the day. Once we arrive at the stadium, I walk off the bus and it
causes my adrenaline to increase and I am ready for the game to
start, but it is still a few hours away. |
Walking into the stadium and seeing numerous seats that will be
filled in a few hours is nerve wrenching, but also exciting. Now it
is the final stretch to the beginning of the game and I can see the
excitement in the faces of all my teammates. As we unpack our gear
in the locker room, Coach Orsini gives a short speech about when and
where the pre-game meetings are going to be held. I attend my
meeting and now all that is left to do is get dressed and warm-up on
the field, then it is game time. As I put my pads on and listen to
one final song on my iPod, I realize that I am mere minutes away
from the biggest game of my life.
We begin to warm-up together as a team and the fans begin to pour in
by the hundreds and fill up all of the empty seats. The clock on the
scoreboard reaches fifteen minutes left before the game and we run
into the locker room for a final speech and prayer. Everyone finds a
seat in the locker room and Coach Orsini gives an inspiring speech
and the seniors lead us in one final prayer. It is game time and
there is no going back now as we run onto the field, time fades into
the night, and lifelong memories are created.
