recognizing Cheerleading as a sport by Kelsey Synder Gardner high school Massachusetts

I am writing my essay based on cheerleading, so many people do not believe that cheering is a sport. I have been a cheerleader since I was nine years old. I started cheering for the county on a Pop Warner team so I learned basic skills and the thrill of a football game and competitions.

Once I became a freshman at Gardner High School I tried out for our high school team and began loving the sport even more than I did as a young girl. My cheering coach Rachel told me about a travel team home based in Leominster , Massachusetts where I could try out and travel all over even as far as Florida, Maryland, and Hershey PA. to name a few. Cheering has been my life for all my four years at Gardner High School.

I began practicing 3 to four times a week for my high school team and my travel team and kept a decent grade point average. My Senior Coed travel team started to travel to places one could only dream of on a low income budget. I have performed at Universal Studios in Florida and that was so exciting, but knowing that I am representing my team is the best reward to me. Cheering for my high school is a little different because not only am I engaging in a team sport, but representing our school and cheering for our football, and basketball players.

The past two years at Gardner High School I have been given the honor of being one of the team captains. Captains work hard with the team fundraising for camp, uniforms, and general practices to make sure that our performances at every game shows great team and school pride. We have conducted ourselves as a mature and dedicated team at all games and competitions. I have learned that there is no I in team we all play a very important roll.

There are many different skill levels in cheering which many people do not know, from tumbling to stunting. Competitions are judged by how well your team does on a point scale. Points are deducted for safety issues, and many other different things. Cheering has become a worldwide sport there is even a lot of just male teams. Colleges and High schools are finally realizing the level of difficulty and that cheering is truly a sport, not just a cheering section at a game.

I plan on attending Worcestor Polytechnic Institute for a degree in engineering after my graduation this May from Gardner High School. My years of cheering for Gardner High along with my travel team the Montachusett All Stars has molded me, I feel to achieve high in all I do. I am planning on representing my college by joining the cheering squad there but also I want to try the crew team for I feel I could be an asset to the team. Sports play a big part in all of our lives and they are all equally rewarding in there own way.

You must have spirit, talent and desire to be a cheerleader. Many colleges and universities offer Cheerleading/Athletic scholarships as well as academic ones.
