INFLUENCED BY MY SPORTS HERO BY KELSEY WICKLINE TRUMBULL CAREER AND TECHNICAL CENTER OHIO

What is a hero? What is a hero for? What is a sports hero? Are they for support? Are they supposed to be your friend? In my years of playing basketball, I have gained confidence, leadership, and how to work as a team.

I would’ve never learned these things if it wasn’t for one person. Since I was in 8th grade I have looked up to him. I have dedicated much of my time to the gym, practicing 4 hours a night. Michael Jordan has been an incredible influence in my life. From being a high school basketball player to being a junior high basketball coach. I’ve realized I can be anything I want to be, but I have to work hard at it. Nothing comes from just sitting around.

Basketball has become my life, if I could, I’d sleep with a basketball by my side. So going into my Freshman year, varsity team and new high school teachers. It all came fast, every time I walked in the gym, I felt the adrenaline rush hit me, but I was nervous, too. I constantly thought to myself, “Michael Jordan doesn’t get nervous, so get over it and play the game.” He also inspired me with school, my grades have gotten better every year.

The next year was my sophomore year, I became more committed to basketball; I thought I could be like Michael Jordan if I wanted. This is the year I stepped it up a notch. I was not just a basketball player for the 5th year in a row, but I was an assistant jr. high girls basketball coach.

This was the year I realized if I work hard at practice, then the game will be fun. So going straight from my two-hour practice to another two-hour practice. Of course I thought Michael Jordan spent many hours in the gym everyday, but I was only a sophomore in high school. I had homework and sports to concentrate on. To me, sports always came first; I could’ve cared less about school. That’s just how I was as a sophomore.

Then came the year, my current year of high school, I am a junior. Going to a new school, new friends, a job, and most importantly, basketball. So, I started concentrating on school, by maintaining a 3.2 GPA; my job, working 4 days out of the week; and my sport, basketball. I’m still dedicated every time I walk on the court, I give it 110%. I play every game with my heart and like it’s the last game I will ever play. Michael Jordan inspired me to work hard and succeed.

I am the current leading scorer on the team with 210 points for the season. I’ve learned the importance of teamwork when needed and I’ve learned when to shoot the ball and how to shoot it, all because one person that I looked up to.

It’s amazing how one person can change someone else’s life. Everyone has their sports hero, whether it’s a famous player or their dad or mom. Everyone needs to be inspired. No one should be left thinking they can’t succeed, it just takes work. Work hard and it’ll show in games. Everyone needs a sports hero. Mine is Michael Jordan, who’s yours?
