GAME DAY BY ALEXIS GILMORE, NORTH MYRTLE BEACH HIGH SCHOOL SOUTH CAROLINA.

It’s Friday. The day starts with my alarm sounding, plunging me awake. I pull back the covers and stumble out of bed. As I walk to the bathroom to do my morning routine, I remember it’s the big day. I rush: wash my face, brush my teeth, do my hair, then get dressed. I sit on my bed putting my shoes on, remembering the sound of the buzzer and how the crowd cheered with alacrity in the last minute of the game.

I walk to the kitchen to grab a bite to eat. My mom must have known how important this day was to me. On the table are a plate of scrambled eggs, two sausage links, and a piece of wheat toast with her famous strawberry jam. I scoff it down and head out the door. I yell bye, to my mom, as the door closes.

On the way to my bus stop, I began to think of the techniques I will use to lead our team to a victory. The thought quickly fades as I hear the bus coming around the corner, jumping over every pot hole in the dusty road. It stops. The doors fly open. I walk up the stairs and find a seat on the over crowded bus. Seven minutes before the early bell rings, the bus pulls up to the school. Moving through the morning rush of teenage boys excited for the big game and girls checking out each other’s outfits, I walk through the doors of North Myrtle Beach High School. As I walk down the hallway, there are signs posted up on the walls. I began to read, don’t miss the big game! NMB Chiefs will take down the MB Seahawks home, tonight @ seven o’clock! I walk through the door of my British Lit class, as the late bell rings.

The morning announcements come on. We say the pledge of allegiance and have a moment of silence. I gaze out the window and began to ruminate the national anthem playing. Every player has a hand over her heart and a solemn look on her face. The anthem ends, the crowd begins to cheer, and the player’s adrenaline is pumping from their warm-up and the excitement of the game. Cheerleaders began to chant, jump ball, jump ball! Get it! The buzzer sounds, the referee throws up the ball, and the players jump for the ceiling. We have the ball and we begin to run up and down the court bouncing, stealing, and shooting the ball. It’s fourth quarter with only five minutes left in the game.

The noise from people cheering faded out by the thoughts in my own head. As I’m dribbling down the court, I watch my opponent and check for an open player on the court. I go right, with 1 second left on the clock, and hit a lay up for the game point. We win the game and the crowd cheers franticly. My teacher taps my desk, breaking my thoughts. The bell rings. I walk to my next class ready for tonight’s game.
