THE BEST GAME EVER BY CELIA GRAHAM CENTRAL CROSSING HIGH SCHOOL OHIO

I remember the best game I’d ever played. I was a junior playing for my high school basketball team The Big Walnut Golden Eagles. We had been practicing for days getting ready for one of our hardest games of the season against the Delaware Hayes Pacers.

All eyes were focused on coach as he went over the game plans. “We’ve been preparing for this game for three days this is our game, now let’s go out there and get another win.

Starting off was Eagle’s ball, we passed the ball ahead and got an easy lay-up scored by our littlest guard Meagan Amos making the Eagles first points on the board. We all ran to our spots in the diamond press, I was on ball. The Pacers threw in the ball and before they knew it they were trapped causing them to turn the ball over, and putting two more points on the scoreboard for the Eagles, after that the Pacers called a time out.

The ref handed the Pacers guard the ball on the sideline to take the ball out. Our press was working until the starting guard of the Pacers threw a full court pass to the post at the top of the key, on the other end of the court; putting their first two points on the board. The game started getting out of hand and more physical ending the first half, with Eagles twenty-one and Pacers twenty-two.

Back in the locker room Coach Turner went over our flaws in our offense and defensive plays. Starting in the second half the Pacers kicked it up a notch ending the third quarter with Eagle’s thirty-one and Pacers forty-two. Coach Turner brought us in for one last talk before the fourth quarter.

It was me, Kaylee, Meagan, Morgan, and Meagan Walters in the game; he had put in all his strongest players. The fourth quarter started and sparks flew. We were executing our plays right, which opened up easy lay-ups and good jump shots, before we knew it we were back in the game. The crowd went crazy. Down by two with only thirty seconds to go we commit a foul putting the Pacers on the line shooting two. Tension from both teams rose as we watched the ball go in the air. First shoot…miss. The referee set up for one more shot. A girl from the Pacers team was laughing and teasing on the victory she saw ahead. It took me so much not to say anything…but I had to, and before I knew it I was on the floor and she was yelling and screaming over top of me.

Both sides of fans went crazy as the referee blew her whistle and signaled a technical on the Pacers. The rowed up Pacer was benched for the game; as our coach signaled our best free-throw shooter, Kaylee to the line.

The gym was silent thirty seconds remained on the clock as Kaylee concentrated to sink these two baskets. She shot the first basket…swish. The crowd went crazy trying to contain their excitement for just one more shot. The gym went silent once more…Kaylee shot…swish. Pounding and whistles from the stands filled the gym. Eagle’s ball, all tied up, Meagan took the ball out and threw it in to Kaylee; before Kaylee knew it she was trapped. She threw the ball back to Meagan but it went out of bounds.

With twenty-three seconds left to go we ran back to set up on defense. The Pacers brought the ball down with eighteen seconds to go. Kaylee played hard defense on the point guard forcing her left towards me; I saw what was happening, with nine seconds left in the game. The point guard passed the ball to her left wing where I was standing for that last second shot. As soon as the pass was thrown I ran in and got the steal of the game. Five seconds to go; fans screaming at the top of their lungs…4-3-2-… I stopped a couple of feet behind the three point line, and popped the last shot of the game as the clock ran down. The ball soared through the air as I stood there holding my form…swish. The gym went wild as the team ran to smiling, cheering, and hugging me out of joy. This to me by far is the best game I have ever played.
