MY DAY IN THE GAME BY KURTIS MELVIN, WEST WARWICK HIGH SCHOOL, WEST
WARWIVK RHODE ISLAND.
It was my last year playing little league baseball. Those
years were so much fun. I was top of my baseball league and everyone
knew it. I was the one who everyone wanted and tried to strike out.
My team was a great team, and we all played well together. We had
the same kids on my team for 4 years straight, and what a team it
was. Lots of us hung out on and off the field. We were about to have
the best game we had ever had.
It was the last season game my last year playing, I was pitching and
it seemed like every pitch I threw was a strike. Everyone was quiet
when I went to throw the pitch, but as soon as the Umpire yelled
strike everyone was yelling and whistling. I struck out every kid
that game but one. That one person came up to bat and it was a girl
who played quite well.
I know I will never forget that game any neither will many others. I
still after all these years have parents and kids come up to me
talking about that game. It was just a game of a life time for me.
Although I still throw strikes, I haven’t had a total strike out
game like that one again. Hearing everyone cheering and yelling that
game was amazing and helped me stand tall and keep throwing strikes.
My coaches were so proud of me, as were I and my parents. What a
game that was. |

One of my best friends was playing first base and he was kind
of goofing off, and sure enough, she hit the ball, just a small
little hit that rolled right up the first base line. My friend was
acting as if he had the ball with no problems and wasn’t trying at
all; he put his glove down just after the ball went under it. The
girl got on base. I wasn’t real happy with my friend only because he
didn’t keep his head in the game, but she never did score, because I
struck the next player out and that made the third out.
Whenever I pitched the kids on the other team didn’t even have time
to hit the ball. They just stood there looking at the ball. It was
the best game for me. I remember parents on the other team wanting
my coach to take me out so the other team had a chance to hit the
ball. My coach said “that`s not fair to my pitcher, this is his last
game and it's his game”. My coach never did take me out of pitching.
It would have been fine with me if he had, but I was kind of
wondering what most were, am I going to throw a perfect game? And in
my eyes and there's, I did. Everyone cheered for me at the end of
the game. High fives were flying everywhere.

My coaches were so excited; they ripped the page out of the score
book and gave it to me so I always had that sheet to look back on.
Of course my mom, stepdad and brother were there cheering me on, the
only thing my mom regrets is that she didn’t have the video camera
with her. That game really boost my ego. I went on to play Baberuth,
middle school baseball, high school and legion baseball. I am
currently playing my last year on my high school varsity team as a
pitcher. And will be playing on the legion team again this fall.
