Athletics Department of Ashland University

The athletics department of Ashland University commented that anyone can be an Eagle! The department was referring to the full support given to intramurals where students can play their favorite sports in a tournament with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Making facilities available for varsity players and non-athletes is a major area of concern of the department. For football games and practice, the Dwight Schar Athletic Complex, Jack Miller Stadium – Fred Martinelli Field and the Robert Troop Center are excellent venues. Basketball, volleyball, and wrestling are best held in Kates Gymnasium. The Sawyer Field Complex: Donges Field hosts baseball. Soccer and track & field are regular activities at the Dwight Complex: Ferguson Field/AU track. Swimming is a sport for the Recreation Center: Messerly Natatorium; Ashland Country Club for golf; Brookside Park for softball; and the AU Tennis Courts for tennis.

The varsity sports program of Ashland University covers men’s sports, such as baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, swimming & diving, track and field, and wrestling. On the other hand, women’s sports consist of basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, track and field, and volleyball. Widely and annually recognized for having an excellent and the best all-around athletics department in the country, the Eagles participate competitively at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II and the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).

The Ashland University Eagles are expected by the university and fans to perform optimally both on and off the field. The student-athletes have to maintain a high grade in the classroom and also win games in the arenas. The Eagles responded to the challenge by bagging 10 GLIAC Commissioner’s Awards for academics since 2007; achieving 16 Academic All Americans; consistently finishing in the Top 10 of the Learfield Sport’s Director’s Cup rankings; snatching numerous All-Americans and national championship title in nearly every sport they joined.

Guide to Athletic Scholarships at Ashland University

Giving value to special talents of students is validated by the athletic scholarships of Ashland University. Selected athletes who passed the standards of NCAA, head coaches and the athletic director, will receive athletic and non-exempt aid as determined by the coaches and coordinated with the Financial Aid Office. Having a chance to represent the school in a sport that the student-athletes love to play in and at the same time obtain a college degree is a big incentive to incoming freshmen and other students. In addition to the university’s need-based programs, academic ability and music and theater excellent performances are also rewarded through the Ashland University Grants and Scholarships. Other types of scholarships are related to ministerial and missionary aspects of the Brethren Church, alumnus and sibling grants, and many others.
